A little background story
Thanks to my parents' guidance, music has always been a major part of my life. Before I even began to learn the cello at age 5, I had absorbed a love of music, from masters such as Chopin and Dvorak. At 8, I won a place at Christ Church Oxford to sing in the world renowned Cathedral Choir, a musical education and training that continues to serve me well. I began composing at that time, though I have to admit that many other things in life have taken my attention in the 20 years since Oxford. Before my current career as a composer, I studied Engineering Acoustics, Law, worked in computer aided design, consumer research, did several years frontline support work, financial administration and social housing management.

About Me : Mark Slater
My recording and professional music career began at age 8, as a Chorister at the prestigious Christ Church Cathedral choir in Oxford, England, first place admission with an intake of only 3 each year. My father was a conductor and professor at the Royal College of Music, London, which also meant I started even earlier with the 'cello at age 5. I began composing in the traditions of choral and organ music, influenced by Messiaen, Poulenc, Tippett, Britten and Howells. One of my favorite settings of the canticles was the Bryan Kelly Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis, for the sheer vibrancy of the Latin American rhythms.
When my voice broke at 13, I became disillusioned with music as a career path, which led me along the path to study Acoustical Engineering at Southampton University, then Law in London and then eschewing career altogether, working with disadvantaged adults and young people for Stonham Housing Association. After 10 years of this, I did return to college to study Music Composition for Film & TV at the London College of Music, and took lessons in and around the legendary Ealing Film Studios.
With encouragement from my father, I revisited my piano skills and learnt the Rhapsody on a Theme by Paganini by Rachmaninov in 6 months, giving a performance at the Dorking Halls. Following that I also took on some conducting, composing commissions for the concert hall, theatre and short films.
2007 marked a break through for me, with Tribal DDB New York contacting me to provide a linear symphonic underscore to an interactive website they were building to launch the still unmatched Philips Aurea ambilight flatscreen. The commission allowed me to engage members of the London Symphony Orchestra and record at Abbey Road. The site won several awards and prestigious nominations.
In 2008 another major commission followed to provide music for an important documentary about the History of the Telescope, to mark the International Year of Astronomy in 2009. Since then, other exciting projects have followed, in particular several films for full dome theaters that increasingly are branching out beyond pure astronomy.
